<p>When Danese Milano commissioned him to design a lamp that was practical, durable, affordable, and easy to transport, Munari was reminded of the traditional rice paper lanterns he had encountered when traveling in Japan. But rice paper lanterns are fragile, hard to clean, and tend to yellow over time.</p>
<p>Looking for an industrial alternative, he discovered filanca—a synthetic stretch nylon used exclusively for women's stockings at the time.</p>
<p>Munari visited hosiery factories to test the material and see what forms it could take. "We do not make lamps, sir. Only stockings," one factory told him. Munari replied, "You'll see."</p>
<p>The result was the Falkland lamp: only a few centimeters thick when packaged, as tall as a human when hung, its spontaneous form emerging from the elasticity of the nylon and metal rings of different diameters inserted at regular intervals, enlarged by gravity when suspended from above.</p>
<p>Munari didn't begin with the form of a lamp. He began with the qualities it needed, then looked outside the conventions of lighting to find the right materials and methods. We're looking for a designer who works the same way: someone who studies the systems and materials at hand, then finds a way of putting them together that feels both unexpected and inevitable.</p>

Senior Product Designer

<p>In the 1940s a wealthy American businessman, known simply as “Collector,”&nbsp; commissioned Anïs Nin, Henry Miller, and other famous writers to produce erotic fiction for his private consumption, at a rate of one dollar per page.</p>
<p>“This started an epidemic of erotic journals. Everyone was writing up their sexual experiences. Invented, overheard, researched from Krafft-Ebing and medical books. We had comical conversations. We told a story and the rest of us had to decide whether it was true or false. Or plausible. Was this plausible? Robert Duncan would offer to experiment, to test our inventions, to confirm or negate our fantasies.”</p>
<p>Nin never met the collector herself. But occasionally she received a phone call.</p>
<p>“Less poetry,” said the voice over the telephone. “Be specific.”</p>
<p>Writing horoscopes is a little like writing erotica. You must write about your own life and everyone you have ever known. You must look directly at the most uncomfortable bits of life: our perversions, shadows, embarrassing insecurities, and describe them as plainly as possible, with generosity and care for our tender hearts and fragile dreams. Doing it well is arduous but can also be pleasurable. A practice for all the other types of writing you will do.&nbsp;</p>
