Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Cloudflare for SaaS
Role Summary
Cloudflare for SaaS lets SaaS providers offer their services on domains branded for each customer, rather than on the provider's own domain. The product powers customer domains and automates the complex work behind onboarding domains, validating ownership, issuing and renewing certificates, and safely deploying configuration across Cloudflare's global network.
The team builds the APIs and control-plane systems used by some of the world's largest platforms. We are evolving these systems to support tens of millions of customer domains, faster and more reliable APIs, simpler configuration at scale, and more Cloudflare products for each customer domain. This work combines customer-facing product development with challenging problems in distributed systems, data modeling, state consistency, observability, and operational reliability.
Cloudflare is looking for a Software Engineer to design, build, and operate the services behind Cloudflare for SaaS. You will work primarily on backend services and RESTful APIs in Go and other languages, modernize legacy control-plane workflows, and improve the reliability and scalability of production systems. You will collaborate with product managers and engineers across Cloudflare, write clear technical specifications, review code, instrument services, and help diagnose and resolve operational issues.
What You'll Do
<ul>
<li>Design, build, and operate reliable backend services and APIs for managing customer domains and their configuration.</li>
<li>Evolve the control plane to support tens of millions of customer domains without sacrificing correctness, availability, or API performance.</li>
<li>Improve certificate and domain lifecycle workflows, including onboarding, validation, renewal, migration, and safe deletion.</li>
<li>Model ownership and shared state carefully so changes remain consistent across distributed services and configuration stores.</li>
<li>Build useful observability, alerts, and operational procedures, and participate in debugging and incident response.</li>
<li>Collaborate across engineering and product teams, document designs and tradeoffs, and review the work of fellow engineers.</li>
</ul>
Role Requirements (Must-Have Skills)
<ul>
<li>3+ years of professional experience building backend systems at a technology company.</li>
<li>Experience writing production-quality code in Go or another language, with a willingness to learn Go.</li>
<li>Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems or high-scale services.</li>
<li>Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across applications, data stores, and production environments.</li>
<li>Proficiency with modern Unix/Linux development and runtime environments.</li>
<li>A track record of delivering well-tested, reliable code and taking ownership of it in production.</li>
<li>Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs.</li>
</ul>
Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
<ul>
<li>Experience designing and evolving RESTful APIs used by external customers.</li>
<li>Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including schema and query design.</li>
<li>Understanding of distributed-systems concerns such as consistency, caching, concurrency, and failure recovery.</li>
<li>Experience modernizing legacy systems or migrating workflows to a service-oriented architecture.</li>
<li>Experience with observability tools and practices, including metrics, logs, tracing, alerting, and SLOs.</li>
<li>Familiarity with PKI/TLS, certificate lifecycle management, ACME, DNS, or domain validation.</li>
<li>Experience with message queues, Kubernetes, or globally distributed configuration systems.</li>
<li>Interest in building intuitive product experiences for customers managing large fleets of domains.</li>

<h3>About the Role</h3>
More than 50% of Internet traffic is automated. Knowing who's human, who's an agent, and who's a malicious actor is core to Cloudflare's strategy, and one of the primary values we sell to our Customers. We're building the products that answer "can we trust this traffic?" and our story is differentiated, but the demand is outpacing the number of experts who can tell our story. This role will drive the solution to this challenge.
We think of this as the next generation of product marketing, built for a technical product and rebuilt as a part of the Product team. At Cloudflare, PMs are the first sellers, and own their own launches, content, and enablement. This role, like the rest of the team, will be both deep in R&amp;D as well as in the field driving real Customer conversations, feeling firsthand what lands, and turning that into the enablement, materials, and programs the entire field runs on. Your credibility comes from carrying the pitch yourself.
You will work directly with the Director of Product and across the PMs who lead each product line. As a member of the product team, your work in the field shapes the strategy and the narrative. You own how far and how fast that story travels, and how well the field can carry it on its own.
<h3>What you'll do</h3>
Own the field's ability to win.
Build the enablement that lets any account team lead a conversation about agents, bots, attackers, or fraud, end to end. This includes training, playbooks, battlecards, demo environments, proof-of-concept guides, competitive intelligence, and certification. You are measured by how capable you make the entire field, and by how much you free up product experts to build rather than sell.
Carry the pitch as a member of the Product team.
Join and drive real Customer calls. This keeps your enablement grounded in what actually works. You will stand up and orchestrate a bench of field subject-matter experts who scale this well beyond one person.
Amplify our story.
Our space is presented through some of the most engaging material in the company, closer to an interactive application than a slide deck. You will extend and evolve that into assets the field can run on its own, and produce new material of the same caliber.
<h3>Who you are</h3>
<ul>
<li>You are deep enough on the technology to earn a room's trust. You can explain, or learn how to explain, how browser automation differs from a headless browser or a credential-stuffing run, where TLS fingerprinting and JavaScript challenges and ML scoring fit into a layered defense, and, most importantly, where security, user experience, and privacy actually trade off against each other.</li>
<li>You are deep enough on the technology to earn a room's trust. You may not know our exact stack or space, yet, but you can already reason about things like how browser automation differs from a headless browser, where TLS fingerprinting and JavaScript challenges and ML scoring fit into a layered defense, and where security, user experience, and privacy actually trade off against each other.</li>
<li>You have done Product or Product Marketing and wanted more of it. More time with Customers, more technical depth, more ownership of whether the field actually wins. You are looking to drive the conversation first-hand, and not behind the scenes.</li>
<li>You have sold or evangelized hard technical products to real Customers, and you want to keep doing it, because you know a message is only true once it survives contact with a skeptical buyer.</li>
<li>You can make a complicated idea land with a practitioner and an executive in the same afternoon, in writing, on a call, or on stage, without dumbing it down.</li>
<li>You judge yourself by how good the people around you get. You have built the training, the playbook, or the program that made a whole team better at something hard, and you take more pride in ten strong sellers than in being the expert everyone has to call.</li>
<li>You go deep on one thing and make it excellent, rather than stretching across ten related things until none of them are sharp.</li>
<li>You can build the demo yourself. You are comfortable enough with AI harnesses or Python, JavaScript, or Bash to stand up a concept of your own.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Nice to have</h3>
<ul>

<h2>About the Role</h2>
We're hiring the first embedded Lead Product Designer for Cloudflare's Web Integrity &amp; Trust product suite. More than 50% of Internet traffic is automated. Knowing who's human, who's an agent, and who's a malicious actor is core to Cloudflare's strategy, and one of the primary values we sell to our customers.
Cloudflare sits in front of more than 20% of the web. That vantage point lets us detect automated threats, fraud, and traffic manipulation at a scale and depth no one else can match. Turning that raw signal into something a human can understand, trust, and act on is one of the most interesting design problems in security today — and it's the problem you'll own.
Our products make probabilistic decisions in an adversarial environment. “Is this traffic truthfully representing who they are?” and "Can we trust this traffic?" doesn't have a clean yes-or-no answer. Our objective is to minimize risk without ever having ground truth. Your job is to make that kind of reasoning legible and controllable to the people who rely on it, from the security analyst running an investigation to the marketing team trying to understand the performance of their most recent campaign.
This role spans the full arc of how customers work with our product suite, from navigation, configuration, exploring and investigating their traffic, to proving the value of what Cloudflare's network sees. Today those experiences live in disconnected places; a core part of this role is envisioning the coherent product they should become. This role will work directly with the Director of Product and across the PMs who lead each product line
This is a rare "0-to-1" seat: you'll help define the interaction model for a suite of product categories we are largely inventing, with room to shape not just how it looks but what it fundamentally is.
<h3>Who you are</h3>
Note: A portfolio is required for this role. Please include a link to work that shows how you think. The interview process will dive in deeper.
<ul>
<li>A product inventor who works in the medium of design. You've taken genuinely ambiguous, ill-defined problem spaces and defined what the product should be. You can point to work where the concept was yours.</li>
<li>You've had to make a complex, high-dimensional system legible to the people who live in it, whether in security, fraud, observability, developer tools, analytics, network operations, finance, or somewhere equally demanding. You don't need a security background, but you need the mind and craft to go deep in one fast.</li>
<li>You use AI fluently in your own craft, and you have the judgment to know where it accelerates the work and where it falls short.</li>
<li>You bring independent design conviction. You've originated solutions in spaces with little prior art, and you can clearly articulate why a design is right, or why you're pushing back.</li>
<li>Exceptional at the full craft — interaction design, information architecture, and especially data visualization — with enough visual polish to make it real and compelling.</li>
<li>Someone who wants to obsess over a domain. You want to go deep, and are excited about pushing boundaries in a complex space.</li>
<li>Comfortable with a blank page. As the first design lead, you'll set your own process and build alongside your peers and engineers.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Nice to have</h3>
<ul>
<li>Experience as the first or founding designer on a team or product.</li>
<li>Exposure to security, trust &amp; safety, fraud / ad fraud (IVT), or ML-driven products.</li>
<li>Comfort prototyping in code, or working fluently with engineers who do.</li>
<li>Familiarity with how analysts or operations teams actually work day to day.</li>
</ul>

<h3 id="JD—SeniorSoftwareEngineer,PKI&amp;CryptographicSystems(MergedDraft)-Abouttherole">About the role</h3>
TLS is the connective tissue of the Internet, and Cloudflare terminates a large fraction of it. Every day our network handles tens of millions of certificate operations across products like Universal SSL, SSL for SaaS, Origin CA, Cloudflare Access, and Cloudflare Tunnel — and the WebPKI ecosystem underneath all of it is undergoing its largest structural change in a generation: shorter certificate lifetimes, a shift toward post-quantum-safe signature algorithms, and new automation and trust-establishment mechanisms on the horizon.
We are investing in the next generation of Cloudflare’s PKI and cryptographic infrastructure to keep up with, and stay ahead of, that shift. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will design and build the systems that manage certificate lifecycles, protect and use private keys at scale, integrate with hardware security modules, automate issuance and renewal, and take Cloudflare’s cryptographic stack into the post-quantum era. You will work at the intersection of applied cryptography, distributed systems, and security engineering — on infrastructure that a large fraction of the Internet quietly depends on.
This is an early-days role on a growing team. The design decisions you make in the first year will shape how Cloudflare’s certificate and key infrastructure operates for years to come.
<h3 id="JD—SeniorSoftwareEngineer,PKI&amp;CryptographicSystems(MergedDraft)-Responsibilities">Responsibilities</h3>
<ul>
<li>Design and build core PKI systems&nbsp;— certificate lifecycle management, X.509 issuance and validation logic, key parameter enforcement, and policy engines aligned with industry standards including CA/Browser Forum guidance and browser root program policies.</li>
<li>Own the cryptographic core.&nbsp;Integrate with FIPS 140-2 Level 3 (and, where required, Level 4) HSMs via PKCS#11 and vendor-native SDKs; build key ceremony and key-lifecycle tooling; enforce strict key-usage boundaries in code.</li>
<li>Automate at scale.&nbsp;Build and evolve ACME-based issuance and renewal pipelines, short-lived certificate rotation, and revocation mechanisms that serve at Cloudflare’s global scale.</li>
<li>Instrument transparency and audit trails.&nbsp;Integrate with Certificate Transparency, build append-only tamper-evident logging, and design evidence pipelines that hold up to rigorous third-party audit.</li>
<li>Maintain accreditation and respond to a changing compliance landscape.&nbsp;PKI operations must maintain compliance under CA/B Forum, WebTrust, and root store program frameworks. You will be aware of, and adapt to, changes in relevant policies, participate in public incident disclosure and discourse, and participate in regular third-party audits.</li>
<li>Represent Cloudflare in the WebPKI community.&nbsp;Write public CA incident reports and serve as a primary contact with the WebPKI community; clear technical writing is core to this role.</li>
<li>Ship the post-quantum future.&nbsp;Contribute to Cloudflare’s ongoing post-quantum migration — including work on post-quantum encryption and authentication — so that Cloudflare’s cryptographic infrastructure stays ahead of the transition.</li>
<li>Own code end-to-end&nbsp;from design through production incident response. Cryptographic infrastructure cannot silently fail; you will build the observability, runbooks, and on-call posture that keep the service inside SLO.</li>
<li>Partner across the org&nbsp;— with the SSL/TLS product teams, the HSM and data-centre infrastructure teams, the Cloudflare Research applied cryptography group, and adjacent product teams that consume PKI as a platform.</li>
<li>Raise the bar.&nbsp;Mentor other engineers joining an early-stage team, run design reviews, and establish the engineering standards, threat models, and secure-development practices this team will operate under for years.</li>
</ul>
<h3 id="JD—SeniorSoftwareEngineer,PKI&amp;CryptographicSystems(MergedDraft)-DesirableSkills,Knowledge&amp;Experience">Desirable Skills, Knowledge &amp; Experience</h3>
<ul>
<li>5+ years of production systems software experience,&nbsp;with a strong operational track record — you have carried a pager for something people depend on.</li>
<li>Deep working knowledge of applied cryptography and PKI.&nbsp;X.509, ASN.1/DER, RFC 5280, CRL distribution, Certificate Transparency, ACME, and the CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements. You do not need to be a cryptographer, but you need to reason precisely about certificate profiles, key parameters, and issuance policy.</li>
<li>Familiarity with HSMs.&nbsp;PKCS#11 integration, key ceremonies, key-attestation flows, and understanding of what FIPS 140-2/3 validation actually means in production.</li>
<li>Strong systems programming background&nbsp;in at least one of Go, Rust, or C/C++.</li>
<li>Distributed systems fluency&nbsp;— you have built or operated globally replicated, availability-critical services with strict correctness guarantees.</li>
<li>Experience designing and operating database schemas for high-integrity systems&nbsp;(Postgres or equivalent).</li>
<li>Security-hardened system design instincts&nbsp;— threat modelling, defence in depth, least privilege, and secure key handling.</li>
<li>Comfort with high-consequence work.&nbsp;A mis-issued or mis-revoked certificate is a public, industry-visible event. You need the temperament to move quickly and the discipline to be careful.</li>

<li>Experience with&nbsp;<code>crypto/x509</code>, BoringSSL, OpenSSL/AWS-LC, CFSSL, or an equivalent PKI codebase.</li>
<li>Experience with WebTrust for CAs / WebTrust BR / WebTrust Network Security audit engagements.</li>
<li>Familiarity with post-quantum cryptography — ML-DSA, ML-KEM, hybrid signature schemes, and the current state of PQ signature standardisation.</li>
<li>Familiarity with emerging browser trust-establishment proposals (e.g. Merkle Tree Certificates).</li>
<li>Prior participation in the CA/Browser Forum, IETF LAMPS / TLS / PLANTS / PQUIP working groups, the transparency.dev community, or a browser root program review.</li>
<li>Experience running or automating offline key ceremonies.</li>

About the Role
Anytime we push code, it automatically affects the millions of Internet properties (powering websites, remote teams, APIs, mobile apps, etc.) running on our global network. Cloudflare's network is one of the largest in the world and spans over 330 cities in more than 125 countries. What's more, Cloudflare operates within 50 milliseconds of 95% of the Internet-connected population globally (for context, the blink of an eye is 300-400 milliseconds!). We are passionate about making the Internet more secure, reliable, and faster for everyone.
Cloudflare’s Engineering teams build and run the software that handles the massive amount of traffic that flows through our network. We also have teams that build the UI and control plane for our software, using modern patterns and libraries in a microservices-based architecture. <h4>About the Department</h4>
Integrated Network Strategy is where Cloudflare's foundational infrastructure planning, network design, and capacity roadmaps are shaped. We own the systems and processes that enable our global network to scale across 337+ cities in 125+ countries while maintaining industry-leading performance and reliability. We design the architectural standards, capacity methodologies, and hardware evolution strategies that keep Cloudflare's network ahead of exponential growth. Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a massively successful business, we leverage our edge and network to solve infrastructure problems at massive scale and efficiency—something nearly impossible for any other organization.
<h4>What you'll do</h4>
We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join our team and lead the design, evolution, and operational excellence of our global network infrastructure. You will own the foundational decisions about how our network grows: from capacity planning methodologies and hardware evolution strategies to architectural standards that inform infrastructure teams across the organization. You will work with a team of passionate, talented engineers and architects that are building the systems powering the internet's most critical infrastructure. You will play an active part in shaping the network architecture, strategies, and long-term roadmaps that will keep Cloudflare ahead of unprecedented scale. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious infrastructure and operational goals. You will change what's possible for internet infrastructure.
If you've designed backbone and edge networks from the ground up, automated BGP policy and traffic engineering at hyperscale, driven network planning and sourcing to balance performance, redundancy, and cost, and led teams through major architectural shifts - this is the role for you. You bring a deep understanding of modern routing protocols (BGP, ISIS, RSVP-TE), software-defined forwarding, and the tradeoffs between automation, standardization, and operational flexibility. You excel at building extensible frameworks that allow teams to solve tomorrow's problems without rewiring today's foundation. You have a track record of taking on greenfield problems and turning them into repeatable systems and processes. Most importantly, you have the respect of infrastructure teams because you combine technical depth with strategic thinking and the ability to influence without authority.
<h4>Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience</h4>
Note: it is not required that you have all of these! Teams have varying needs, focuses, and deep expertise areas.
<ul>
<li>10+ years designing, operating, or planning large-scale network infrastructure at hyperscale (or equivalent)</li>
<li>Proven track record building greenfield network architectures and evolving them as business needs change</li>
<li>Deep, hands-on expertise with modern routing protocols (BGP, ISIS, RSVP-TE, QoS, traffic engineering)</li>
<li>Strong experience with software-defined networking, overlay networks, and programmable forwarding</li>
<li>Expert-level understanding of network economics: cost drivers, capacity planning, peering strategy, and trade-offs between performance, redundancy, and capital efficiency</li>
<li>Track record automating complex network operations and building extensible frameworks that scale across large teams</li>
<li>Experience designing and implementing DDoS mitigation strategies, firewall policies, and network security at scale</li>
<li>Ability to design intent-based systems that reduce operational complexity while maintaining flexibility</li>
<li>Strong systems-level understanding across the full stack: from hardware platforms and protocols through software-defined networking to application-level routing decisions</li>
<li>Experience leading network design, planning, budgeting, and sourcing decisions for large deployments</li>
<li>Ability to think 3–5 years ahead while shipping solutions today</li>
<li>Proven ability to influence without direct authority; comfortable presenting technical recommendations to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders</li>
<li>Strong writing and documentation skills; able to articulate complex technical decisions and trade-offs clearly</li>
<li>Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading teams through major architectural transitions</li>
<li>Comfortable working in a matrix environment with multiple stakeholders (product, operations, procurement, finance) and driving alignment</li>
</ul>
<h4>Bonus Points</h4>
<ul>
<li>Experience at a hyperscaler or large infrastructure platform (Meta, Google, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, etc.)</li>
<li>Background designing and implementing network automation frameworks</li>
<li>Experience with network telemetry, Netflow data analysis, and observability at scale</li>
<li>Track record driving significant cost optimization through network design and peering strategy</li>
<li>Experience with IPv6 deployment and evolution at scale</li>
<li>Knowledge of SDN platforms, hardware abstractions, and vendor-agnostic network design</li>
<li>Familiarity with Cloudflare's products, network, or competitive landscape</li>
</ul>
<h2>What You'll Own</h2>
Network Architecture &amp; Design
<ul>
<li>Design and evolve the architecture of Cloudflare's global network, including core infrastructure patterns, interconnection strategies, and edge deployment models</li>
<li>Establish and maintain design standards that enable consistency, reliability, and defensibility across heterogeneous deployments</li>
<li>Lead architectural reviews; anticipate technical debt and recommend major evolution initiatives, working across team</li>
</ul>
Capacity Planning &amp; Systems Design
<ul>
<li>Own the design and continuous improvement of capacity management processes and systems used across infrastructure teams</li>
<li>Develop methodologies for forecasting demand, modeling growth scenarios, and optimizing resource utilization</li>
<li>Build tools, dashboards, and automated systems that make capacity planning visible, transparent, and actionable</li>
</ul>
Hardware &amp; Network Evolution
<ul>
<li>Drive the evolution of network hardware and platform strategies, evaluating new platforms, vendors, and architectures</li>
<li>Lead technical evaluations of emerging technologies (silicon, switching architectures, routing protocols, optical transport, etc.)</li>
<li>Work with procurement, supply chain, and engineering teams to transition the network to next-generation platforms</li>
</ul>
Next-Generation Planning &amp; Research
<ul>
<li>Conceive and plan multi-year technical roadmaps for network infrastructure, anticipating growth patterns and industry dynamics</li>
<li>Conduct research into emerging infrastructure trends and translate insights into strategic recommendations</li>
<li>Lead architectural exploration and validation projects that de-risk future directions before large-scale commitment</li>
</ul>
Collaboration &amp; Organizational Impact
<ul>
<li>Partner with infrastructure teams to translate architectural visions into operational realities</li>
<li>Work with finance and operations to understand cost implications and optimize infrastructure spend</li>
<li>Mentor and elevate the technical decision-making capability of engineering teams across the organization</li>
