the Role
SonicWall is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep IPv6 expertise to lead the design, implementation, and hardening of IPv6 capabilities across the Sonicwall firewall firmware stack. As a Principal Engineer, you will be the technical authority for IPv6 feature parity, protocol correctness, and interoperability across SonicWall Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) platforms. This role is ideal for engineers with hands-on experience delivering IPv6 in high-performance router, switch, or carrier-grade networking products who are looking to apply that expertise in the embedded network security domain.
Responsibilities

Lead IPv6 Architecture & Feature Delivery — Own end-to-end design and implementation of IPv6 features across the Sonicwall frewall networking stack, including IPv6 routing, interface addressing, DHCPv6, NDP, MLDv2, and IPv6 Policy-Based Routing (PBR).

Drive IPv6 Feature Parity — Identify and close gaps between IPv4 and IPv6 feature sets across subsystems — including VPN Tunnel Interfaces, IPsec/IKEv2, SSL-VPN, Syslog, SNMP, and NAT64 — ensuring consistent dual-stack and IPv6-only operation.

Design High-Performance IPv6 Packet Processing Paths — Architect and optimize the IPv6 dataplane for packet forwarding, classification, ACL matching, and session lookup within the sonicwall high-performance packet-processing pipeline.

Resolve Complex IPv6 Protocol Issues — Diagnose and resolve deep-rooted interoperability, conformance, and performance issues involving IPv6 neighbor discovery, prefix delegation, ICMPv6 error handling, and fragmentation edge cases.

Establish IPv6 Protocol Conformance Standards — Define and drive compliance with IETF IPv6 RFCs (RFC 2460, RFC 4291, RFC 4861, RFC 4862, RFC 6724, RFC 8200, and related extensions) within the Sonicwall frewall codebase.

Cross-Functional Collaboration — Work closely with Platform, Security, Data Platform, and QA teams to integrate IPv6 changes safely across subsystems and validate correctness at scale.

Prototype and Evaluate IPv6 Technologies — Evaluate emerging IPv6 transition mechanisms (464XLAT, MAP-T, CLAT, SRv6) and contribute to next-generation NGFW networking capabilities.

Influence Technical Direction — Drive architectural decisions, IPv6 scalability strategies, and long-term technical roadmap for protocol parity and government/federal compliance (USGv6, IPv6-ready certification, DoD IPv6 mandates).

Mentorship & Technical Leadership — Serve as the IPv6 subject-matter expert (SME) for the Sonicwall frewall engineering org; mentor senior and mid-level engineers and lead cross-team IPv6 technical design reviews.

the Role
SonicWall is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to develop and maintain the Content Filtering Service client embedded in SonicOS — the firmware running on SonicWall firewall appliances worldwide. This module intercepts live traffic, queries the CFS rating servers in real time, and enforces URL-based content filtering policies at the packet level. This is security-critical code: a policy bug is a traffic bypass on a deployed security appliance.
The codebase is in C with a split Control Plane / Data Plane architecture, multi-blade cache synchronization, and multiple firmware version upgrade paths.
Responsibilities

Maintain, harden, and extend the CFS client module across both the control plane and data plane.

Own the binary UDP protocol implementation between the firewall and the CFS rating servers, ensuring correctness and compatibility across protocol versions.

Develop and maintain complete IPv4 and IPv6 support across all code paths.

Own the firmware upgrade and migration paths, ensuring they are atomic, failure-safe, and correctly handle all supported version transitions.

Improve reliability of inter-blade cache synchronization on multi-blade appliances.

Collaborate with the server-side on coordinated protocol changes.

Document the concurrency model, upgrade invariants, and dataplane integration for long-term maintainability.

Collaborate asynchronously with a US-based team and the India-based server team.

Requirements

Expert-level C (not C++): disciplined manual memory management, pointer arithmetic, and systems design.

Multi-core concurrency in C: reader-writer locks, spinlocks, atomic operations, and memory ordering.

Kernel-level networking: deep understanding of how a packet moves through a firewall dataplane — TCP/UDP processing, flow cache, connection tracking. Userspace socket programming alone is not sufficient.

Strong IPv4 and IPv6 across all code paths.

Comfortable navigating and owning a large C codebase with multiple subsystems.

Experience with network testing and debugging tools: packet capture (Wireshark/tcpdump), traffic generators, GDB.

Good written English for remote, asynchronous collaboration.

Nice to have:

Experience with multi-blade or multi-ASIC hardware platforms (Octeon/CVMX or similar).

Understanding of symmetric encryption (AES-CBC, DES) at the C implementation level.

Prior experience on a security appliance, network device, or UTM firmware codebase.

Familiarity with TLV binary protocol design and versioning.

Experience with C fuzz testing or sanitizers (AFL, AddressSanitizer, ThreadSanitizer).

Education & Experience
At least 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent experience preferred. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.

About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on Product Designer to join the Unified Management Portal design team and help shape the unified experience that powers our product portfolio.

The Unified Management Portal consolidates SonicWall’s network, endpoint, email, and cloud security products into a single portal with shared SSO, navigation, and design system — a major product reset.

This is a B2B, enterprise-grade product design role — not consumer. The designer will design for IT administrators, security analysts, network engineers, and managed service provider partners who manage security for organizations of every size, from SMBs to global enterprises.

The work centers on density, configurability, scale, and operational reliability — not consumer-style minimalism or marketing surfaces.

This is a builder’s role on a small, senior team. The designer will own design end to end for product areas with significant business impact, partner closely with Product and Engineering, and work in an AI-augmented design environment where Claude and other AI tools are part of the daily workflow.

What You’ll Do

Own end-to-end design for one or more Unified Management Portal product areas, from discovery and information architecture through interaction design, visual polish, prototyping, and design QA.

Design complex enterprise workflows including policy builders, dashboards, configuration wizards, multi-tenant management, alerting, and incident response screens.

Build and maintain components, tokens, and patterns in the Unified Management Portal Figma design system.

Generate working interactive prototypes using AI tools such as Claude, v0, Figma Make, and similar tools.

Use Claude across the design workflow, including prototype generation, design-system documentation, research synthesis, content design, and competitive analysis.

Partner closely with Product Managers, Engineering Leads, and Solution Architects across time zones.

Contribute to design-system governance and documentation as the platform scales across product lines.

Conduct usability reviews and design critiques, raising the quality bar across the team.

What We’re Looking For

4–7 years of product design experience in B2B, enterprise SaaS. Consumer-only backgrounds are unlikely to be a strong fit.

Expert-level proficiency in Figma, including auto-layout, variables, component libraries, variants, branching, and design-system contribution.

Demonstrated fluency with Claude as a working tool in the design process, not as a novelty.

Working experience with at least one AI prototyping environment such as v0, Lovable, Bolt, Framer AI, or Figma Make.

Strong systems thinking and comfort designing within and contributing to a large, evolving design system.

Ability to design complex, information-dense enterprise workflows with clarity, balancing power-user depth with accessibility for less technical users.

A portfolio with shipped B2B or enterprise SaaS work demonstrating decision-making, not just final visuals.

Strong written communication skills for working asynchronously across time zones.

Comfortable working independently and driving design direction with limited oversight.

Cybersecurity, networking, or infrastructure product experience is a strong plus, but not required. We can teach the domain; we cannot teach taste and judgment.

Experience with MSSP or multi-tenant admin workflows is a bonus.

A clear point of view on how AI changes product design, and where its limits are.

Education

Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience.

Degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Communication, or related field preferred.
